50% car owners saw mileage fall post E20. Did you?
Since India mandated 20% ethanol blending in petrol (E20), vehicle owners are complaining about engine issues and dropping mileage.
Ethanol is plant-based biofuel made from sugarcane, maize, and other agricultural feedstock.
The government's case for ethanol blending is: lower pollution, better engine performance, foreign exchange savings through reduced oil imports.
What's in it for you?
- •If you drive a vehicle made in 2023 or later, your car was likely built to handle E20, though ethanol could still be more corrosive to your engine, as per reports.
- •If you own an older bike or car, there could be reduced mileage. 1) As per a LocalCircles survey, 1 in 2 petrol vehicle owners with a vehicle that was purchased in 2022 or earlier say the mileage has reduced in the last 9 months. 2) 29% said they are seeing 'unusual' wear and tear and need for repair of their engine.
- •Some auto brands have released E20 conversion kits. You can check if your car manufacturer offers something similar.
