'Free seats on airplanes' rule grounded for now
News illustration

The government has put on hold the rule requiring 60% flight seats to be free for selection.

This came after the airlines opposed it, saying it would hurt their revenue and operations.

For now, the system stays the same — only about 20% seats are free, rest are paid, as per The Economic Times.

What's in it for you?

Pay for good seats: You may still have to pay extra for seat selection, with prices ranging from Rs 200 to Rs 2000 based on position and legroom.

Middle Seat: If you don’t want to pay for a seat, you will have to contend with sitting in a middle seat at the back.

High costs: Airfares have already shot up as airlines pass on fuel price hikes on to consumers. The government also removed a pricing cap for airlines recently.
