It's June. Where is the monsoon? Delay can impact you
News illustration

ETA of the southwest monsoon has been rescheduled multiple times already by the IMD - from May 26 to June 1 to June 4.

2026 is also likely to record the lowest rainfall in 11 years, with 90% of normal rainfall expected, which is “below normal.”

The culprit, El Niño, is warming the Pacific Ocean that weakens winds, triggering droughts, heatwaves and low rainfall.

What's in it for you?

  • INFLATION ON YOUR PLATE Low rainfall could reduce farm output, affect supply of staples such as tomatoes and onions, and increase inflation by over 5%.
  • PROLONGED HEATWAVE Delayed monsoon + Uneven rain distribution = higher temperatures + abrupt dry spells.
  • ELECTRICITY IMPACT LIKELY Less rain dries reservoirs, cutting hydro-power. In your fight against humidity, expect power cuts and rising electricity bills.
