What is the real cost of education in India?
As the youth in the country protest failures in the education system, especially around exam paper leaks, the real burden on families comes through the expenditure on education.
As per govt data, education inflation in India sits between 3-5% annually. But research by 1 Finance found that schools across cities usually raise fees by 10-12% per year.
The Comprehensive Modular Survey: Education 2025 by the government also showed 95% of students meet their educational expenses mainly through their families.
What does education in India cost?
- •As per govt’s Comprehensive Modular Survey: Education 2025: School fees in rural India: ₹2,639 in govt schools and ₹19,554 in non-govt schools. School fees in urban India: ₹4,128 for govt schools and ₹31,782 for non-govt schools.
- •Tuition fee in rural India for higher secondary: ₹4,548 Tuition fee in urban India for higher secondary: ₹9,950
- •But several reports suggest that private school fees are much higher, especially in cities. Also, costs also come from uniforms, stationery, transport, etc.
- •Rising student debt : A recent report by the Hindu Business Line showed that education loans from banks had grown a massive 15% in FY26 to touch ₹8.5 lakh crore.
