India's Census 2027, the first since 2011, officially kicks off today, April 1, 2026.
It runs in two phases. Phase I (on household conditions) between April and Sept. Phase II (population enumeration — the one that counts people) in February 2027.
For the first time, the entire census will be conducted digitally. And you can now fill it in yourself online before anyone visits your home.
What questions will you be asked?
What is the material of the floor, walls and ceiling of your house (cement or tiles, etc.)? Essentially meant to determine if it’s a Kutcha or Pucca house.
Is the house you stay in ‘Good, Liveable, or Dilapidated’?
Do you belong to SC/ST or Other caste? Other caste-based questions will come up in Phase 2.
Number of married couples in the house. If you are in a live-in relationship, you may be asked if it’s a ‘stable union’. If yes, you will be treated as a married couple.
Some other questions are around whether you have access to the internet, laptops, smartphones and other devices.
You will also be asked what is the cereal most consumed in your house. So even if you eat rice and wheat, you will need to record the cereal that is consumed most often or in the largest quantity in your household.
NOTE: From April 1 till April 15, the portal for self enumeration (se.census.gov.in) will be open in Andaman and Nicobar, Delhi , Goa, Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Odisha, and Sikkim.
